L.A.S.S.O. (Local Animal Shelter Support Organization) is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization. Its purpose is to raise funds to establish and operate a spay/neuter facility, as well as to improve the animal welfare programs for the Elko Animal Shelter and its shelter animals.
L.A.S.S.O. was founded as the dedicated fundraising arm of the City of Elko Animal Shelter. Our unique partnership with the city has created an innovative animal welfare model serving Elko County, NV.
L.A.S.S.O. fills critical animal welfare gaps that the City of Elko cannot address due to funding limitations, ensuring comprehensive care for all animals in need. The City of Elko funds the Elko Animal Shelter operations, while L.A.S.S.O. provides essential enhancements and animal welfare programs. It is important to note that L.A.S.S.O. is not a rescue or adoption service.
Dumke-Weeks Spay/Neuter Clinic: With the support of the Val Dumke Estate and Antje Weeks Estate, alongside contributions from animal welfare foundations, corporations, and individual donors, L.A.S.S.O. successfully raised sufficient funds to purchase a modular building, equipment, and medical supplies for establishing a spay/neuter program.
The Dumke/Weeks Spay/Neuter facility was established with private donations and the support of L.A.S.S.O. in 2010. Over 8,500 shelter animals have been spayed, neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped.
Facility Improvements: In addition to the new spay/neuter building, L.A.S.S.O. renovated the current animal shelter, added a much-needed isolation unit, incorporated an outdoor exercise and bonding area, and installed a security system.
Historic No-Kill Achievement: We are proud to share that, as of 2023, the Elko Animal Shelter has achieved "No-Kill" status and received the prestigious Best Friends Touchstone Award. This milestone would not have been possible without the dedicated support of individuals and corporations.
Community Impact:
"Together we can eliminate pet overpopulation in Elko County" - L.A.S.S.O.'s mission continues to transform lives, both human and animal, through innovative partnerships, dedicated volunteerism, and comprehensive animal welfare programs that serve as a model for rural communities nationwide.
Spay/Neuter Operations: All animals adopted from the Elko Animal Shelter receive spaying/neutering, vaccinations, and microchipping as part of our comprehensive welfare program through the Dumke-Weeks Spay/Neuter Clinic.
TNR/Working Cat Program:
This program has reduced the number of animal euthanasia by Spaying/Neutering Community cats, returning the cats to their original location or relocating cats into our ranching community.

The Elko Animal Shelter & LASSO have worked tirelessly this year to save as many pets as possible.
As we look forward to 2026, we are proud of what we accomplished but the need continues to grow.
We are excited to be working on our shelter building expansion and would love your support!
